🧭 What is AI? AI vs ML vs Deep Learning vs GenAI

EnglishHinglish

🏠 Real-life example

Think of how a child learns to recognise a mango. Nobody gives them a rulebook. They see many mangoes, and someone says 'this is a mango' each time. Soon they recognise a new mango on their own. Machine learning works the same way: show the computer many examples and it learns the pattern.

💡 In simple words

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the big umbrella: any computer system that does something we'd call 'smart'. Machine Learning (ML) is the part of AI where computers learn patterns from data instead of following hand-written rules. Deep Learning is a type of ML that uses large 'neural networks' and works well for images, speech and text. Generative AI (GenAI), like ChatGPT or Claude, is deep learning that creates new content: text, images, code. Most AI jobs today combine these with normal software engineering.

Each circle sits inside the bigger one: GenAI is a kind of deep learning, which is a kind of machine learning, which is a kind of AI.

🪜 Step by step

  1. Traditional software: a programmer writes the rules (if amount > ₹50,000 then ask for OTP). The computer follows them exactly.
  2. Machine learning: instead of rules, we give thousands of examples with answers (these transactions were fraud, these weren't). The computer finds the pattern itself.
  3. Deep learning: the same idea with very large neural networks, which can learn from raw images, sound and text without us describing features.
  4. Generative AI: deep learning models trained on huge amounts of text or images, so they can create new text, images or code when you ask in plain language.
  5. AI jobs: most real work is building software around these models: getting data, connecting them to apps, testing quality and running them reliably.

🔑 Key terms

Model
A program that has learned patterns from data and can make predictions.
Training
The process of showing a model lots of examples so it learns.
Generative AI
AI that creates new text, images, code or audio.

👀 See it in action

text
Rule-based (old way): IF email contains 'lottery' THEN spam
Machine learning: Show 10,000 emails labelled spam / not spam
→ model learns the patterns itself
Generative AI: 'Write a polite reply to this email'
                      → model writes a brand-new reply

Same goal (handle emails), three very different approaches.

⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking AI 'understands' like a human. It finds patterns in data; it can be confidently wrong, so always check important outputs.
  • Using AI where a simple rule works. If 'if this, then that' solves it reliably, you don't need ML.
  • Believing you need a PhD. Most AI roles need programming, data skills and good judgement; heavy maths is needed mainly for research roles.

✅ Quick check

ChatGPT writing a new poem is an example of…

  1. A spreadsheet formula
  2. Rule-based software
  3. Generative AI
Show answer

C. Generative AI: It creates new content that didn't exist before, which is what generative AI does.

🙋 Questions learners ask

Is ChatGPT machine learning or deep learning?

Both. It's a deep learning model (a transformer), and deep learning is a kind of machine learning. Because it generates text, it's also called generative AI.

Will AI replace software engineers?

It changes the job more than it removes it. Engineers who use AI tools well and can build reliable AI features are in high demand. The risk is for people who don't adapt.

📌 Remember

AI ⊃ Machine Learning ⊃ Deep Learning ⊃ Generative AI. Each is a more specific part of the one before.
